As Uganda Joined the rest of the world to commemorate World AIDS day on Tuesday December 1st 2020, teachers have been challenged to educate the learners on ways how the virus is transmitted and how they can care for themselves from contracting it.

The call was made by the chairperson of Uganda National Teachers Union Mitooma District branch Mr. Dennis Turyomwe in an exclusive interview with our reporter at Rwentokye Primary school.

Tirwomwe asserted that most people have forgotten that AIDS still exists and kills arguing that this is dragging their lives of Ugandans especially the youths into turmoil.

Furthermore, Tirwomwe wants the government to consider re-opening other classes too in schools though covid-19 is still in existence so that communities can get understand how they can live with the scourge.

Government closed down schools in March 2020 as a measure to save more than 15 million Ugandans who are in schools and institutions from contracting the scourge.

He said there is no need of re-closing schools as suggested by some of the individuals or keeping other learners at home yet then can study in the current environment.

“You cannot say that schools close again, what if covid-19 attacks your home, can you close your home and run away?, We are prepared enough to even have isolation rooms and teach Ugandan children”, Turyomwe said.

Mr. Kamusiime Urbans, a science teacher in the district told our reporter that if all Standard Operating Procedures are observed, schools can continue operating even if they register positive cases.

“Let other pupils come because according to the guidelines we are following, the schools have the capacity to keep these learners safer even at home”, he explained.

Nasasira Yudita, a P.7 pupil said as pupils, they are observing all the guidelines including social distancing and wearing face masks while in public places to avoid being infected by Coronavirus.

She wants her fellow learners to also abstain from sex if they want to live HIV negative status
