Fire at parliament Paralyses COSACE meeting

Parliamentary business of the committee on commission and statutory and state enterprises were yesterday paralyzed after fire that gutted the conference hall where the members of parliamentary were having a meeting forcing the committee chairperson Ibrahim Kasozi to adjourn the meeting until further notice.

The COSACE committee is investigating the issuance of land tiles by the Asian Custodian Board chaired by Makindye west MP. Ibrahim Kasozi was shocked after the fire outbreak and ruled to adjourn the meeting until the situation comes to normalcy

“As committee could not proceed with the sitting because of the situation in the room. This prompted the CID officer at the scene to put off the light to avoid continued occurrences of electric shock”Kasozi Ibrahim ruled.

Speaking to The African News Journal after the incident Kyagegwa woman Mp Stella Kiiza explained that she was also taken by surprise that such an incident could occur in the middle of the meeting.

Other legislators who included Samya Bugwe Mp Gideon Onyango also expressed disappointment on the safety of Mps.

The same implies to Kashari south Mp Nathan Itungu also expressed shock on the incident.

The committee was meant to meet with committee members of the Asian custodian board which has been handling the compensation of Asian who were expelled by President Idi Amin who acquired illegal titles.

However according to chairperson the committee was adjourned the meeting because of poor representation which saw deputy solister general Christopher Gashabakire appearing instead of the attorney general.

During the sitting Samya Bugwe Mp Gideon Onyango had proposed the meeting to adjourn because sending the solister general instead f the attorney general calling this answer estimating the committee.

 Meanwhile Aruu county Mp Odonga Otto has asked parliament to intervene in the delayed process of issuing national identity cards. Otto raised the matter on the flow of parliament which prompted the deputy speaker Jacob Olanyah to instruct the state minister for internal affairs to respond.

However the minister asked for two weeks to present a comprehensive report.

Here Mps who included Kakuuto county Mp Christopher called for an immediate solution because many Ugandans continued to find difficulty to access IDS.

Other mps who included Buyaga county Mp Bernabas Tinkasimire also expressed anger on the process saying something must be done.
