Uganda Cranes has withdrawn from CHAN due to lack of financial support, Federation of Uganda Football Association president Moses Magogo has revealed.

The Cranes had already qualified for the tournament, a second-tier continental competition played by nationals plying their trade in their respective domestic leagues.

CHAN will be hosted in Algeria next year and Uganda Cranes would have been making their sixth successive appearance having featured at 2011, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2020 editions.

According to Magogo, funds for the tournament have been appropriated by the Parliament but the finance ministry has not availed the same to them.

“It is sad. Like for the U23, we are left with no further option but to withdraw the Uganda Cranes from CHAN finals because the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development has not provided the funds as appropriated by Parliament”, Magogo revealed.

He added that Uganda risks being sanctioned by CAF which could have far-reaching consequences on the development of Ugandan football as he sympathized with footballers, and coaches would work hard for the qualification.

“The sanctions to Uganda will affect the future if we don’t take the hard decision now. Sorry for the players and coaches who qualified the team but it is the moment to face the reality”.
