Kampala, Uganda’s capital city in East africa, is set to become the epicenter of water innovation and collaboration as it prepares to host the 22nd African Water & Sanitation Association International Congress & Exhibition (AfWASA ICE) set to run from February 16th – 20th, 2025.

The global event promises to be an exciting mix of groundbreaking discussions, technical expertise, and cultural immersion, all focused on shaping the future of water and sanitation management across Africa.

Dr. Rose Kagwa, Senior Director of Business and Scientific Services at the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), told the media that the Congress preparations are in full swing, confirmed that NWSC is ready to host this global event in Kampala come 2025 with backing from a strong network of local and international partners.

Supported by the Ministry of Water and Environment and the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), the event has already garnered support from industry giants such as Grundfos, Total Energies, and JICA.

More partnerships include organizations like IHE Delft, the African Development Bank, and the World Bank, are ensuring that this Congress will have a lasting impact.

The 2025 global water congress stands out for several reasons, not least of which is the AfWA’s 45-year anniversary, alongside the rich opportunities it offers for learning, networking, and collaboration. The Congress will also showcase a diverse array of technical sessions, with over 500 paper submissions expected, spotlighting groundbreaking innovations and research in the water and sanitation sector.

Among the most exciting new additions is the Operational Challenge, where plumbers, technicians, and engineers will compete in skills-based challenges, probably as a way to comprehend and appreciate the crucial roles they play in ensuring the accessibility of efficient and sustainable water and sanitation services across the continent.

Delegates will also have the opportunity to explore two action-packed exhibition halls, with pavilions from countries like Japan, China, Turkey, and Germany. These exhibitions will showcase cutting-edge technologies and solutions for water management, offering a glimpse into the future of the sector.

The event will also create space for meaningful discussions on gender and youth empowerment in the water sector with special forums dedicated to the Young Water Professionals and Women in Water, as a way of cultivating collaboration and networking opportunities.

But, the Congress isn’t just about business. Uganda’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty will be on full display, offering attendees a chance to explore the Pearl of Africa. Delegates can take part in a symbolic Water Walk, which will replicate the daily struggles many women and children face when accessing clean water especially in rural areas. For those seeking adventure, tourism packages will include trips to see Uganda’s famous mountain gorillas, the source of the Nile, and the equator, while families accompanying delegates can enjoy curated cultural experiences throughout the country.

With early registration now open, organizers are urging all interested parties to secure their places before the discounted rate slots and hotel spaces fill up. Meanwhile, utility companies are encouraged to exhibit their innovations, while participants are invited to sponsor colleagues with accepted papers, ensuring broad participation across the sector.

“This Congress is more than a conference; it’s a celebration of progress, collaboration, and the future of water management in Africa.” Kagwa says

The African Water and Sanitation Association (AfWASA) is a professional association of establishments, enterprises, and utilities operating in the areas of safe water, sanitation, and the environment in Africa. It has over 237 members, with 100 of them being utilities from over 40 countries across the Continent.

As the countdown to February 16th, 2025 ticks away, excitement is building. The 22nd AfWASA Congress will be a historic event, bringing together academics, professionals, and industry leaders from across the globe. Do not miss the opportunity to be part of this visionary gathering. Visit the official AfWA Congress website at www.afwasa2025.org, to register and learn more.
