The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), under the leadership of Deputy Managing Director Dr. Sylvia Arinaitwe, recently marked a significant milestone in improving water accessibility in Rukiga District.

The commissioning of several water projects took place at the end of May, with initiatives launched in Kinyamozi Village and Rwemigugu Village, both located in Kibanda Parish of Kamwezi Sub-County. Additional projects were inaugurated in Muhanga Town Council Center, strategically situated along the Kabale-Mbarara Road, as well as in Bukinda Sub-County.

The need for these projects became apparent during the commissioning event, where local leaders highlighted the dire water situation in the region. Mr. Karegyeya Didas, the Chairperson of the LC1 for Kinyamozi Village, shared that residents previously depended on stagnant water sourced from nearby swamps.

This reliance not only posed severe health risks due to waterborne diseases but also endangered young children, who were at risk of drowning in the ponds.

Mr. Didas explained that the situation deteriorated further during the dry season when these stagnant water sources would dry up, leaving the community with little choice but to seek unsafe alternatives. The commissioning of these water projects promises to transform the lives of the residents by providing them with safe and reliable water sources.

Local government officials also expressed their gratitude for the efforts made by the NWSC. Rukiga District’s Assistant Resident District Commissioners, Barbara Kyasimire and Gibbs Barigayomwe, praised the corporation for its commitment to alleviating water scarcity in Kamwezi Sub-County. Their support underscores the importance of community collaboration in addressing local needs.

During the ceremony, Mr. Okaranon Edmund, Senior Director of Engineering Services at NWSC, emphasized the importance of protecting the newly installed water systems. He cautioned attendees against vandalism and urged the public to pay their water bills on time. Such actions are essential for maintaining the sustainability of the water projects and ensuring continuous service delivery.

Dr. Arinaitwe highlighted the role of electricity in facilitating effective water pumping in the area. She encouraged community members to consider starting businesses that could leverage the newly installed electricity, thereby enhancing local economic development. The potential for new business ventures could further improve the livelihoods of residents and foster a sense of community empowerment.

In her closing remarks, Dr. Arinaitwe commended the Government of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), led by President Yoweri Museveni, for its unwavering support in fostering peace and community development. She reiterated the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and services, which are crucial for the well-being of the population.

The commissioning of these water projects marks a significant step forward in addressing the water crisis in Rukiga District, promising a brighter and healthier future for its residents. With ongoing support and community involvement, the NWSC aims to ensure that access to safe water becomes a reality for all.
