Ex-Minister,Bushenyi Woman MP Mary Karooro Okurut is dead!

Born Mary Busingye Karooro Okurut on December 8, 1954, in Bushenyi District, she was a celebrated educator, author, and politician whose work greatly influenced Uganda’s academic and political spheres.

She attended Bweranyangi Primary School and Bweranyangi Girls’ Senior Secondary School, later completing A levels at Trinity College, Nabbingo.

She graduated from Makerere University with a BA in Literature in 1977 and an MA in Drama in 1981. That same year, she began lecturing in Makerere’s Department of Literature, a role she held until 1993, dedicating 17 years to teaching.

Okurut entered public service as Press Secretary to the Vice-President (1994–1996), later serving as Commissioner in the Education Service Commission (1996–1999) and Press Secretary to the President (1999–2004).

She joined elective politics in 2004, replacing the late Bernadette Bigirwa as Bushenyi District Woman MP, a position she held until 2020. She championed women’s rights and education during her three terms in Parliament.

In the Cabinet, she served as Minister for National Security (2015–2016) and later as Minister for General Duties in the Office of the Prime Minister (2016 onwards).

She was also Uganda’s National Coordinator for the Sustainable Development Goals.

Outside politics, Okurut was an acclaimed novelist, known for works that explored women’s lives and confronted societal taboos.

She proudly identified as an author, educator, feminist, Christian, and advocate for the girl child, leaving behind a legacy of service, intellect, and empowerment.
