After more than two decades of enduring the deteriorated condition of the Nebbi–Goli road, residents in Nebbi and across the West Nile region have finally received encouraging news. President Yoweri Museveni has pledged to have the road tarmacked.

During his campaign visit to Nebbi on Saturday, President Museveni, who is also the presidential candidate for the NRM, was told by local leaders about the long-standing neglect of the Nebbi–Goli route. They highlighted the immense hardship the people of Alur and the wider West Nile area have faced due to the road’s poor state.

The 21-kilometer Nebbi–Goli Customs Road serves as a vital transit route for goods heading to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and links up with the Paidha–Logiri–Vurra Customs corridor, making it one of the region’s most significant trade arteries.

Retired Archbishop Luke Orombi of the Church of Uganda pointed out to the President that the people of Nebbi and Alur have consistently supported him at the polls but they continue to be left out when it comes to essential infrastructure projects, particularly road construction.

In his response, President Museveni assured the crowd that the road will soon be tarmacked, though he did not provide a specific timeline. He also emphasized that road development should go hand in hand with efforts to boost household incomes and fight poverty. “Citizens should not only demand tarmac roads if they are not using them productively.”

The President is currently touring the West Nile region as part of his campaign for another term in office under the NRM banner.
