Uganda’s National Environment Act (2019) has earned global recognition after being named a 2025 World Future Policy Award Winner by the World Future Council. The prestigious award celebrates visionary legislation that contributes to sustainable development and environmental protection for current and future generations.

According to the World Future Council, the Act was selected by an international jury of experts under the theme “Living in Harmony with Nature and Future Generations.” The recognition highlights Uganda’s strong commitment to environmental stewardship and climate resilience through robust legal and policy frameworks.

The National Environment Act, 2019—enacted to strengthen environmental governance—introduced key reforms including the promotion of sustainable natural resource use, integration of climate change considerations into development planning, and stricter penalties for environmental violations. It also established clear mandates for environmental agencies and emphasized public participation in conservation efforts.

By earning this award, Uganda joins a distinguished list of nations recognized for innovative environmental policies that balance economic growth with ecological preservation.

The accolade, jointly supported by the World Future Council, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), affirms Uganda’s leadership in aligning national legislation with global sustainability goals.
