EC Boss Byabakama:Only 21 Million Voters expected to Vote in 2026 General Elections, Printing of Ballot Papers Starts!

The Electoral Commission (EC) , Boss Justice Simon Byabakama ,has revealed that 21 million voters have been cleared to participate in the January 15, 2026, general elections.

According to Byabakama of the 21 million voters women represent 53% and the men account for 47%.

During a press conference at the commission’s offices in Kampala, Byabakama highlighted that Uganda has 146 districts, 312 counties 50, 739 polling stations. The Commission has cleared 83,597 candidates to compete for 45,505 elective positions across the country .

Byabakama , further stated that the EC has set aside November 27th and 28th as special nomination days for candidates in constituencies where nominated contenders died after their nomination papers had been accepted. The nominations will cater for both local government and parliamentary positions.

The districts affected include Kasanda, Kabong, Nakasongola, Sironko, Kwania, and Tororo.

“In this regard, I urge all Ugandans to embrace the coming general elections slated for 15 January and exercise their rights as provided for in the Constitution of Uganda,” Byabakama stated.

The EC boss said 1,000 temporary staff will be recruited and train as election officers and and given skills to handle the biometric gadgets that will be deployed for the nationwide exercise .

Byabakama warned candaites against tribal politics and use of inciting language and or hate speech noting that ,:“ This is not fair and does not portray the qualities of a good leader.”

Byabakama said the EC will issue updated voter registers and campaign guidelines in the coming weeks as part of its final preparations.

The EC has also commenced printing of ballot papers for members of parliament .
