The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerubaga, has officially announced the lifting of the social media restriction in Uganda. This comes after the the government has restored full access to social media platforms, which were blocked ahead of the recent general election.

In a statement on his official X account today, Monday, January 26, the CDF confirmed that social media access had been restored, thanking Ugandans for their patience and cooperation throughout the election process. He further stated that while restrictions are being lifted, future limitations may be implemented if necessary.

“We are releasing all social media today. I thank all the great people of Uganda for their support and cooperation throughout this electoral season. You are truly the greatest people on earth, and you give us all the courage to serve. God bless you all,” the post read.

The CDF explained that the Ugandan government had initially restricted access to platforms such as X, WhatsApp, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook due to security concerns surrounding the elections.

Additionally, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) temporarily shut down internet access to prevent the spread of misinformation and incitement during the sensitive period.

He also mentioned that internet services were restored on Sunday, January 18, after President Yoweri Museveni’s victory was confirmed. The restrictions, he added, were a necessary and proportional response to ensure the integrity of the election process.
