KCCA Closes Wampewo Avenue for Asphalt Works

The temporary closure is expected to affect traffic flow in surrounding areas, particularly during peak hours, as motorists adjust to the diversion routes.

Motorists using Wampewo Avenue will have to use alternative routes after the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) temporarily closed the stretch on Tuesday to facilitate ongoing road works.

In a traffic advisory issued on Tuesday, KCCA said the road has been closed to all vehicular traffic as engineers begin priming works ahead of asphalt laying.

“Please note that we have started priming Wampewo Avenue in preparation for asphalt works. As a result, this stretch will be closed to all vehicular traffic,” the Authority said.

KCCA advised motorists to divert to alternative routes, including Jinja Road, Archer Road, and John Babiiha (Acacia Road), in order to avoid traffic delays.

“Motorists are advised to utilise all other routes including Jinja Road, Archer Road, John Babiiha (Acacia Road), and others to avoid traffic delays,” the statement added.

The Authority noted that the works are being expedited to take advantage of favourable weather conditions.

“KCCA@Work is utilising this window of favourable weather to fast-track the delivery of this project,” it said.

Residents living within the affected area have also been given specific access guidelines during the construction period.

“Residents around the area will be required to use Ngabo Road (yellow line on the map) and go through Uganda Management Institute (UMI) to access Jinja Road,” KCCA said.

The closure is intended to allow the application of a prime coat, a key preparatory stage before asphalt surfacing begins.

Wampewo Avenue is a key link in Kampala’s road network, connecting Jinja Road at the roundabout near the Ministry of Internal Affairs to Upper Kololo Terrace.

The route serves both the central business district and the Kololo residential and commercial areas, and passes key establishments including Hotel Africana.

The temporary closure is expected to affect traffic flow in surrounding areas, particularly during peak hours, as motorists adjust to the diversion routes.
