Police have arrested a woman accused of stealing  her cousin’s three-month-old baby in Kireka, Wakiso District.

The suspect, identified as Brenda Amongin, was apprehended in Soroti District following a coordinated police operation that led to the safe recovery of the infant.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Rachael Kawala, the incident occurred on May 5, 2026, in Kireka D Cell, Namugongo Division, shortly after the suspect had visited her cousin’s home.

“On May 5, 2026, at approximately 2:00 PM, the mother of the baby briefly stepped outside, leaving the child asleep in the house. Upon her return, she discovered that the baby was missing, and the suspect had also disappeared,” Kawala said.

Police revealed that the suspect had arrived at the home a day earlier, claiming she had travelled from Kalaki District to process her National ID under an express service.

Kawala said swift police action enabled officers to track and arrest the suspect in Soroti, where the baby was found unharmed.

“Police at Jinja Road Division successfully recovered a three-month-old baby boy who had been reported stolen. The suspect was tracked and arrested in Soroti District, and the child was safely recovered,” she added.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Amongin may have staged the abduction after allegedly misleading her husband into believing she was pregnant.

“On May 2, 2026, she reportedly asked him for money, claiming she needed to go to the hospital to deliver,” Kawala noted.

The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to face charges, while arrangements are underway to reunite the baby with the family.
