National Resistance Movement legislators from the Greater Masaka sub-region are protesting their exclusion from influential parliamentary sectoral and standing committees.
The grievance was raised by Gyaviira Ssemwanga, MP for Buyamba County in Rakai District and the Greater Masaka regional NRM parliamentary whip, during the party’s regional mobilization meeting ahead of village and women council elections.
Ssemwanga directly appealed to NRM Deputy Secretary General Rose Namayanja Nsereko, stating that when Government Chief Whip Jane Ruth Aceng presented committee nominations, no lawmaker from Greater Masaka was appointed to a leadership post or assigned to a high-profile panel.
He said that despite the region delivering a significant number of NRM parliamentary seats in the last general elections, it was denied representation on critical committees such as National Economy, Finance and Budget, Physical Infrastructure, Health, and Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, where major government policies and manifesto priorities are discussed and implemented.
Ssemwanga appealed to Namayanja to present the matter to the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) for reconsideration and possible reallocation of committee positions.
Meanwhile, Willy Lugoloobi, the MP for Bujumba Constituency in Kalangala District, says they are concerned about several unfulfilled presidential pledges, warning that the delays could weaken the party’s grassroots support.
He urged Namayanja to use her office to support them in pushing government to prioritise Greater Masaka in the implementation of development projects and statutory appointments, arguing that such efforts would strengthen the NRM’s support ahead of future elections.
In her response, Rose Namayanja acknowledged the complaints and pledged to engage the party leadership in Parliament to seek a solution.
She explained that the committee appointments were made under tight timelines, as the party leadership was heavily occupied with post-election activities, leaving little time for wider consultations.
