The Member of Parliament representing Igara East constituency Micheal Mawanda has urged the government to come up with alternative mechanisms to help in empowering teachers diversify improve their economic livelihoods and live a poverty free life.

Hon.Mawanda made the remarks shortly after police, yesterday, surrounded Focus Primary School in Kasoko and found out that teachers were carrying out classes during lockdown.

According to Micheal Mawanda, this is caused by the teacher’s lack of alternative jobs to earn a living other than teaching.

“The only thing we need is to go back to the drawing board and get solutions on how we can empower our people,” he said.

Mawanda said, that an alternative in the job market is what Ugandans need to improve their standards of living.

“We really need alternatives, whereby if this one fails, one tries the other,” said Mawanda.

On the effects of covid-19 Mawanda said, this was a lesion for every body and that Ugandans must learn to diversify in all ways business so that they can widen their income base.

“I believe people have learnt a very big lesson during this COVID-19 pandemic. People need to know that you need to stand on your own at any one time.” Mawanda noted with concern.
