In a bid to avoid the spread of Covid-19 in prison facilities, leadership of the Uganda prisons service asked the government agencies to institute mechanisms where all the suspects be tested for corona virus before admission into the prison facilities to reduce the spread of corona virus among the inmates.

While in the press conference at Media center, Frank Baine said that suspects should be tested at the entrance as one of the measures to curb the spread of the virus.

Bayine said that it was cheaper to check and confirm in time.

“Testing may be expensive but treatment is much more expensive than testing”, Baine said.

This has followed the tests on 154 prison warders that were made from Gulu where one of their soldiers who was coming from a leave, tested positive and was admitted to Lira hospital.

Baine said that they have 10260 prison warders and 61867 suspects that need to be checked in order to understand their health status.

Baine said that negotiations between the police and the prisons are going on to test the suspects before they are admitted in the prisons.

Frank Baine calls upon Officers in Charge at all police stations to enforce the government’s directives and the standard operating procedures as guided by the ministry of health because the virus spreads like bushfire.
