Kampala International University has appointed Prof. Mahmood Mamdani as their Chancellor after a successful end of tenure of Prof J. M. P. Sebuwufu.  

According to a statement from the university, his appointment follows a successful end of tenure of Prof J.  M.  P.  Sebuwufu, “Who has served diligently and with total commitment, for which the University is greatly appreciative.”

He is the director of Makerere Institute of Social Research. He became director of MISR in 2010. He received his Ph.D. in government from Harvard University.

According to the Institute’s website; Mamdani is Herbert Lehman Professor of Government in the Department of Anthropology and Political Science and the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University, where he was also director of the Institute of African Studies from 1999 to 2004.

He has taught at the University of Dar-es-Salaam (1973-79), Makerere University (1980-93), and University of Cape Town (1996-99) and was the founding director of Centre for Basic Research in Kampala, Uganda (1987-96).

Mamdani specialises in the study of African and international politics, colonialism and post‐colonialism, and the politics of knowledge production.

 His works explore the intersection between politics and culture, a comparative study of colonialism since 1452, the history of civil war and genocide in Africa, the Cold War and the War on Terror, and the history and theory of human rights.
