Internal Affairs Minister, Maj Gen (Rtd) Kahinda Otafiire has condemned a UPDF soldier who shot at, and injured a traffic police officer for towing their car on Sunday.

The traffic officer, who was later identified as Police Constable Robert Mukebezi was trying to tow a Toyota Prado TX military vehicle with registration number H4DF 1391 that had been involved in an accident when he suddenly shot in the leg.

Speaking about the incident, the internal affairs minister said that banditry will not be allowed in the country’s forces and that the shooter will face the law.

Otafiire said that, “I am not going to make any apologies for an officer who shoots people like that; we cannot allow banditry in the forces.”

The minister said that there is no excuses for misusing fire arms, and as a person who was part of the National Resistance Army (NRA), these are acts that they do not want to see or hear about happening anywhere in the country.

“He will be found and we will bring him to book,” Otafiire reasserted.

Otafiire’s remarks come at a time when several other members of the civil society and police have also condemned the shooting.

Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga said on Monday that the incident is “an act of impunity, brutality and unprofessionalism by the individual officer.”

Early investigations into the incident indicated that the suspect, who according to police, is currently on the run works with the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence(CMI).

Daily Post also understands that the shot police officer was amputated on Tuesday evening, to save his life, having lost a lot of blood.
