National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has once again been awarded for its excellence in delivering safe and reliable water to Ugandans. It was a joyous moment as the corporation’s Managing Director Dr. Eng. Silver Mugisha received the award for the best Asset Management Solutions in recognition of NWSC’s efforts in managing assets at an event held ) in Amsterdam on May 20. The NWSC MD received the award during an engagement with Vitens Evides International (VEI).

It should be remembered that in 2018, National Water and Sewerage Corporation and Dutch Water operator Vitens Evides International (VEI) Netherlands signed a partnership Agreement to guide engagements in a Water Operators’ Partnership (WOP) designed under the WaterWorx program, an International Water Operators’ Cooperation initiative that brings together over 39 water utilities from 15 countries across the globe with the sole purpose of improving water and sanitation services to over 10 million people by 2030.

Besides ED Dr. Eng. Mugisha, other NWSC officials who were in Amsterdam for the engagement with Dutch Water Operators Vitens Evides International (VEI) Netherlands included: Dr Rose Kaggwa, Director Business and Scientific Services, as well as the Kampala Water General Manager Mahmood Lutaaya.

The NWSC team made presentations on the collaborative role of the Water Worx Program in the development of the Mapkit tool in the Kampala Water Region. Their presentation wowed the group of CEOs from different utilities that were in attendance. The NWSC Managing Director, in particular, shared the different asset management practices the corporation is using to minimize costs and risks involved in water service.

Dr. Eng. Mugisha and his NWSC team also visited, shared and explored utility experiences and best practices, capacity building possibilities and collaboration with IHE-Delft, CEOs from Vitens Evides International, Randwater of South Africa, Brazil and Dhaka of Bangladesh.

Before the various teams meeting in Amsterdam could return to their respective countries, they formulated follow-up steps that will pave the way for preparations for the next UN Water Conference which is expected to be held in New York next year.

Days earlier, the NWSC MD had also shared the corporation’s story on another global stage. He was a guest in Madrid, Spain during a panel discussion in the Peer to Peer Strategies for Performance Workshop. At the event organized by the Global Water Leaders Group, Dr. Eng. Mugisha explained the factors behind the NWSC success story and the corporation’s strategic intentions.

Held under the theme: ‘water positive zero carbon,’ the workshop was a pre-event session for the three-day Global Water Leaders’ Summit that ran from May 16-18 at the Novetel Center Hotel Madrid.
