Ssekandi served as the eighth vice president of Uganda from May 2011 until June 2021.
Before that, he served as Deputy Speaker of Parliament from 1996 until 2001 when he was elected the Speaker, a position he held until 2011 when he was replaced by Rebecca Kadaga.
He also also served as the MP for Bukoto County Central constituency from 1996 until 2021.

The Former Speake and Vice President of Uganda HE. Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi Paid courtesy visit to the speaker of of Parliament Anita Among who commended her for exceptionally handling parliamentary business and administration professionally that is distinctly putting the leadership and image of the August House on top as all staff and legislators both wings and sheds of opinion are united.

Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi made the remarks during a meeting with the Speaker at her chambers at Parliament this afternoon.
Ssekandi also commended the Among for expeditiously handling business and excising good judgement during the last session which saw many bills being passed by the August house.
Speaker Among on the other hand thanked the former VP for maintaining a close relationship with Parliament and for offering wise counsel to the leadership.
