Members of Parliament have overwhelmingly backed a motion to thank President Yoweri Museveni for his State of the Nation Address, delivered on June 5, 2025, highlighting achievements in economic growth, poverty reduction, and national development.

The motion, moved by Hon. Faith Nakut (NRM, Napak District), was presented during Thursday’s plenary session and praised the President for his government’s performance and policy clarity.

“These interventions have increased Ugandan participation in production and trade. More Ugandans are into business now,” Nakut said, citing key achievements including support for small businesses, growth in national revenue, and power generation.

She noted Uganda’s revenue growth from UGX 5 billion in 1986 to UGX 31.9 trillion, and an increase in electricity generation from 156 megawatts to over 2,000 megawatts.

Nakut also highlighted stabilized fuel prices and expanded investment in mineral processing.

The motion received strong support from MPs across the ruling party. Hon. Dicksons Kateshumbwa (NRM, Sheema Municipality) hailed Uganda’s economic transformation.

“In 1986, our GDP was US$ 3.92 million. It’s now projected to hit US$ 60.4 billion, with expected growth of 7 percent in the next financial year,” he said.

He credited government programmes such as the Parish Development Model, Emyooga, and the Youth Livelihood Project for empowering communities.

“Some people have touched a million shillings for the first time in their lives,” he noted.
Kateshumbwa also pointed to the tourism sector’s revival, with earnings rising from US$ 562 million in 2020 to US$ 1.4 billion in 2024, citing improvements in infrastructure, peace, and new routes by Uganda Airlines.

Hon. Jane Avur (NRM, Pakwach District) praised Uganda’s macroeconomic stability.

“The shilling appreciated by 6.1% over the past year, and inflation remains low. Uganda has the second-lowest inflation rate in Africa over the past decade,” she said, calling price stability a “crucial enabler of investment and predictability.”

She also noted a 26% rise in exports, reaching US$ 9.3 billion, and highlighted the cosmetics industry as a major employer of women and youth.

Speaker Anita Among welcomed the motion and MP contributions, emphasizing the impact of peace, exports, and services on Uganda’s development.

“We have a stable economy. We have peace. And when you look at the development coming up, it is out of these exports and services that jobs are being created,” she said.

Hon. Hope Grania Nakazibwe (NRM, Mubende District) applauded President Museveni for championing women’s leadership, crediting affirmative action for increased female representation in key government positions remarks that drew applause from the House.

The debate was deferred pending a formal response from the Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi, who is expected to deliver his rebuttal in the coming days.

Parliament traditionally debates and passes a motion of appreciation following the annual State of the Nation Address, recognizing the executive’s policy direction and achievements.
