The Prime Minister, Ms Robinah Nabbanja, has appealed to Democratic Front (DF) president, Mr Mathias Mpuuga, to consider entering a cooperation pact with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), similar to the existing arrangement with the Democratic Party (DP).
Speaking on Sunday during a fundraising mass for the construction of St Joseph Catholic Sub-Parish Church in Nyendo Town, Masaka City, Ms Nabbanja said a partnership would enhance service delivery and reduce political friction.
“I call upon Hon. Mpuuga to bring the Democratic Front to the table so that we can work together like we are doing with DP and UPC. What matters most is serving Ugandans, not fighting over politics,” she said.
The Prime Minister, who contributed Shs10 million towards the project, further told Christians not to be swayed by politicians she accused of taking personal credit for government projects.
She insisted that all roadworks in Masaka City are funded by President Museveni’s administration through the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) programme.
Ms Nabbanja also suggested that Mr Mpuuga should not pursue presidential ambitions in the 2026 General Election, but rather seek re-election as Nyendo-Mukungwe MP. “Let him come back to Parliament so that I can continue enjoying his tough questions. That’s where he fits best,” she remarked, drawing laughter from the congregation.
In his brief address, Mr Mpuuga avoided responding to the Prime Minister’s overtures and instead urged Christians to contribute generously to the church construction. “The need is genuine. Some of the old churches are now too small to serve the faithful,” he said.
Masaka Diocesan Bishop Serverus Jjumba, who led the service, encouraged Christians to support such development initiatives as a way of strengthening their faith communities.
The fundraising drive attracted contributions from several leaders, with President Museveni donating Shs20 million and Mr Mpuuga pledging Shs5 million on behalf of the Democratic Front. Organisers say Shs640 million is required to complete the project.
