Rice water is hailed as a natural haircare remedy. It’s not just another trend, but has its roots in ancient cultures. Here’s how you can use it to reduce hair fall.

Haircare problems slide into life like a sneaky DM and just don’t seem to leave. Frizzy hair, split ends, and hair fall – these are common issues almost everyone complains about. But sometimes, all it takes is a simple home remedy to get rid of the woes.

People in countries like China and Japan have been using misty water with a slight milky texture to rinse their hair and nourish the scalp. Some tout it as an elixir for hair. We are talking about rice water – a starchy, cloudy liquid that can be obtained after boiling or soaking rice.

Rice water has been in use for centuries. It is considered to enhance hair health, reduce breakage, and make them long and shiny.

Rice water is not just another DIY trend. It sure had its viral moment, but its actual roots are centuries old.

Fermented rice water is a powerhouse of nutrition. It has essential proteins, vitamins, minerals, and certain amino acids that help nourish hair and follicles. Amino acids and protein content may help strengthen the hair, add volume and improve texture.

The key player is inositol – a carbohydrate that helps strengthen hair and improve its elasticity. That’s why rinsing with rice water can aid in repair, promote growth, and enhance texture. Though scientific evidence remains limited, the popularity of rice water has grown manifold. Several haircare brands have even introduced product lines featuring rice-based hair masks, conditioners, and more.

How to use rice water for hair

Rice water is a convenient choice – but why? Because it’s basically a beauty elixir sitting right on your kitchen shelf. Here’s how you can put it to use:

  • First, rinse half or one cup of rice thoroughly to remove any dirt. Then, add two to three cups of water and either boil or soak the rice until the water turns slightly cloudy. During this process, essential vitamins and minerals are released into the water.
  • Next, let the water ferment at room temperature for about 24 to 48 hours.
  • Once the rice water is ready, apply it to your hair and gently massage your scalp for a few minutes. This not only helps distribute the water evenly but also improves blood circulation. You can also use it after shampooing.
  • Let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes to allow the nutrients to absorb properly before rinsing.

So, how often should you use it? There’s no fixed rule, but using it once or twice a week is generally considered effective.

That said, different hair types have different needs, and yes, too much of anything can backfire. When it comes to haircare, one-size-fits-all has never been the answer. Overloading your hair with protein from rice water can do more harm than good.

A rice water rinse isn’t a magical fix for all your hair problems. If you experience scalp irritation or develop sensitivity after using it, it’s best to do a patch test or consult an expert.
