To honor their significant contributions to Uganda’s political and economic transformation over the past 40 years, 33 individuals will receive medals at the NRM @40 celebration. This event marks the 40th anniversary of the National Resistance Movement (NRM).
The awards ceremony, taking place today at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, is part of the country’s celebrations of the NRM’s impact on shaping Uganda’s modern history. It will recognize individuals whose work has supported the party’s vision and legacy.
Minister for the Presidency, Ms. Milly Babalanda, shared details with the media on Sunday, January 25, 2026, in Kampala. She explained that the event would celebrate the contributions of NRM political leaders as well as people from various sectors, including business, education, health, and civil society. The NRM @40 Awards aim to acknowledge the dedication of Ugandans who have played a key role in the country’s economic and social development since the NRM came to power in 1986.
The Minister also emphasized the long-standing influence of the NRM, led by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who is expected to attend the event. Under the NRM, Uganda has seen significant reforms in governance, infrastructure, and foreign policy. However, the NRM’s time in power has been debated supporters praise its role in bringing stability, while critics raise concerns about political freedom and governance.
Ms. Babalanda pointed out that the individuals being honored today have made outstanding contributions to advancing the NRM’s goals. She noted that the awards are part of ongoing celebrations of the NRM’s victory and struggle in 1986.
“We are not only celebrating the past but also the people who have been central to Uganda’s transformation. The NRM has been an agent of change, and the people we are recognizing today have helped make its vision for Uganda a reality,” Babalanda said.
She also mentioned that the ceremony would attract a wide range of prominent figures, including politicians, business leaders, and diplomats, as the country reflects on its journey since the NRM took power.
The Minister stressed that the NRM @40 awards offer a chance to both celebrate the nation’s achievements and acknowledge the ongoing challenges in Uganda’s political and economic landscape.
