The National and Sewerage Corporation a body mandated to provide universal access to clean and safe water in Uganda, informs the general public and its customers to always use digital payment methods in payment and clearing of water bills propmptly.

With prompt payments, clean and safe water is accessible to millions of homes and businesses under the programme Code named “Water for ALL” UNIVERSAL ACCESS as mentioned in the national development programme and those of the NRM Government.

The NWSC,under the leadership of Managing Director Eng. Dr. Silver Mugisha, has implemented innovative systems to make bill payments seamless and convenient. Customers can now opt for direct debit services, where banks automatically settle monthly bills, or use popular mobile money platforms like MTN and Airtel to pay anywhere, anytime. These initiatives aim to eliminate barriers to prompt payments while enhancing customer experience.

The convenience and timely bill payment plays a critical role in enabling NWSC to fulfill its mission. Here’s a closer look at why paying water bills on time is so vital for service delivery and sustainable growth:

Ensuring Steady Cash Flow for Operations

Running a water utility of NWSC’s scale involves significant costs. From operating water treatment plants to maintaining distribution networks and sewage systems, the corporation requires steady cash flow to function efficiently. Essential expenses like chemicals for water treatment, electricity for pumping stations, water meters, and fuel must all be consistently funded.

Timely bill payments allow NWSC to cover these operational costs without disruption, ensuring that clean water remains available at all times. It also enables the corporation to plan effectively, expand its services, and meet Uganda’s growing water demand.

Preventing Service Disruptions

Uninterrupted water supply is at the heart of NWSC’s commitment to customers. However, delivering clean water to millions requires resources—from purchasing power for pumping stations to maintaining vehicles that respond to service needs.

When customers pay their bills on time, NWSC can avoid disruptions caused by cash shortfalls. Timely payments mean consistent funding for vital services like water treatment, repairs, and emergency responses, ultimately keeping water flowing to homes and businesses without interruption.

Driving Sustainable Development

Uganda’s demand for water has surged dramatically in recent years. At the recent NWSC Baraza, it was revealed that daily water production has more than doubled—from 276 million cubic meters in 2013 to an impressive 730 million cubic meters in 2024.

This increase reflects NWSC’s commitment to expanding its reach, not just in urban centers but also to underserved rural communities. Timely bill payments are key to sustaining this progress. They enable NWSC to invest in infrastructure projects, extend water services to new areas, and explore sustainable solutions such as renewable energy for pumping stations and smart metering systems.

Ultimately, every bill paid on time contributes to Uganda’s water security and the well-being of its citizens.

Supporting Infrastructure Development and Upgrades

One of NWSC’s primary priorities is developing and upgrading water infrastructure to meet the needs of Uganda’s rapidly growing population. From expanding water supply networks in bustling urban centers to improving access in remote rural areas, these projects require significant investment.

Timely payments provide the funds necessary for these critical upgrades. Without this revenue, infrastructure projects could stall, jeopardizing water access for thousands of people.

Extending Services to More Communities

Prompt bill payments allow NWSC to reinvest in communities across Uganda. For every water bill paid, a significant portion is ploughed back into infrastructure and service delivery projects. This reinvestment has enabled NWSC to implement initiatives around the country in both rural and urban centers for domestic, commercial ETC.

These projects bring clean, safe water to areas previously underserved, transforming lives and driving development. Timely payments, therefore, don’t just support existing customers—they pave the way for millions more to access safe water.

Promoting Accountability and Transparency

When customers consistently pay their bills on time, it fosters a culture of accountability and mutual trust. NWSC, in turn, is empowered to operate transparently, clearly showing how funds are allocated to maintain systems, develop infrastructure, and improve service delivery.

This financial transparency builds confidence among customers and reinforces their role as active participants in sustaining the utility’s operation.

The Ripple Effect of Timely Payments

At its core, timely bill payment is more than a financial transaction. It is a shared responsibility that drives progress, empowers communities, and ensures access to a resource that is essential to life. NWSC’s innovations, like direct debit and mobile money options, make paying bills easier than ever and when customers play their part, they help keep water flowing for themselves and others across the nation.

In a recent report, Auditor General Edward Akol revealed the extent of the crisis, highlighting government entities as some of the largest defaulters.

By paying your water bill promptly, you are not just settling a debt. You are contributing to a future where clean, safe water reaches every corner of Uganda sustainably, reliably, and efficiently.

NWSC revealed a new tariff structure Customers who previously paid UGX 3,727 per unit of water will now pay UGX 4,100, reflecting an increase of UGX 373 per unit. This adjustment, approved during a board meeting in July 2023 is aimed at sustaining operations.

National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to customer satisfaction by releasing answers to some of the most frequently asked questions. This proactive step underscores NWSC’s dedication to addressing public concerns, making it one of Uganda’s most customer-focused institutions.

Tariff Adjustment Announced

Customers who previously paid UGX 3,727 per unit of water will now pay UGX 4,100, reflecting an increase of UGX 373 per unit.
