The Electoral Commission of Uganda has reiterated that the use of Biometric Voter Verification Kits (BVVKs) is mandatory for all polling stations in the 2026 General Elections. This decision aims to strengthen election integrity and prevent voter fraud. “The Commission reiterates that the use of the Biometric Voter Verification Kit (BVVK) during polling is now mandatory,” the EC Chairperson stated.

The mandatory use of BVVKs is reinforced by a Statutory Instrument signed by the Minister responsible for Justice and Constitutional Affairs. This legal framework ensures that all registered voters are verified using biometric data before casting ballots.

Biometric verification will help prevent impersonation and multiple voting, safeguarding the integrity of Uganda’s elections. Voters are urged to familiarise themselves with the process, which will be deployed nationwide at over 50,000 polling stations.

The EC has advised political parties, candidates, and voters to prepare for BVVK use and ensure that polling officials are supported in the proper handling of these devices. Lessons from previous elections show that training and awareness are key to smooth election day operations.
