The National Water and Sewerage Corporation has launched an 11.4 billion shilling project to upgrade the water supply network in Kanungu, moving to eliminate a deficit that has left residents with half the water they require.

The 18-month project aims to expand service to 282,000 people, up from the current 216,893. The investment follows years of water rationing caused by a system that produces 1.5 million liters per day despite a demand for 3 million liters.

Silver Mugisha, managing director of the corporation, said the existing infrastructure was built two years ago by the Ministry of Water and Environment and is no longer sufficient.

The project scope includes the redevelopment of the Mpangango water source and the development of the Matanda source. Each facility is expected to provide 1 million liters per day.

Gets Technical Services Ltd. will lead the construction, which involves laying new pumping mains from the Mpangango source to the Katete reservoir and building a 200,000-liter reservoir in Kihihi. The work will span six town councils, including Kanungu, Kihihi, Kambuga, Butogota, Kanyantorogo and Nyamirama, as well as 10 subcounties.

Edward Mutabaazi, director of Gets Technical Services, said the company will complete the work within the contracted timeline.

The Kanungu upgrades are part of a broader national effort by the corporation to address urban water challenges. Similar initiatives are underway in Kampala, where a 100 million euro project is expected to help increase national production to 500 million liters per day.
