When billion dollar Ugandan business magnate Mohammed Hamid looked across the country’s hospitality landscape more than a decade ago, he saw a glaring gap: Uganda did not have a modern, world-class five-star hotel capable of hosting high-end tourists, business leaders, and major international events.
Hamid, the founder of Aya Investments, says he was frustrated by “extremely expensive hotels in Uganda with lacklustre service and outdated infrastructure.” Determined to change the narrative, he embarked on what would become one of the most ambitious private real-estate developments in Uganda’s recent history.

He assembled a team of world-class architects, secured the necessary investment, and began construction on what would later be known as the Pearl of Africa Hotel, now a landmark of Kampala’s skyline.
The project, however, was anything but simple. Hamid reveals it took 11 years to fully complete the towering luxury structure—years marked by financial strain, technical demands, and the sheer magnitude of building a hotel of such scale in Uganda.

“It cost a ridiculous amount of money,” he admitted, “but it was completely worth it.”
Today, the Pearl of Africa Hotel stands as a statement of ambition and a symbol of Uganda’s potential to compete in the global hospitality arena.

With its grand architecture, expansive conference facilities, high-end amenities, and panoramic views of Kampala given its location on Nakasero hill, the hotel has hosted international delegations, business summits, and elite travellers.

With a quiet but ambitious shift to WorldHotel Luxury, the facility promises to change how we know opulence.
For Hamid, the project was never just about luxury accommodation, it was about raising the country’s standards, boosting tourism, and proving that Ugandan enterprises can execute projects of world-class quality.

Aya Investments continues to be a major player in manufacturing, real estate, and hospitality across the region, but the Pearl of Africa remains Hamid’s most iconic imprint on Uganda’s capital, a testament to resilience, vision, and the power of private investment to shape national infrastructure.
