The Buganda Kingdom has launched an e-commerce platform, Kibuga Online, through its telecommunications company, K2 Telecom, in an effort to link small and medium-sized enterprises with consumers nationwide.

The platform was unveiled at Bulange, the kingdom’s administrative headquarters in Mengo, marking a significant push into the digital economy by the traditional institution.

Charles Peter Mayiga, the Katikkiro (Prime Minister) of Buganda, described information and communication technology as the essential resource of the 21st century during the launch.

“Technology is the gold and oil of our time,” Mayiga said. “There was a time when wealth was measured by the amount of gold or silver a nation possessed. Today and in the future, global leadership will belong to those who master information and communication technology.”

Mayiga noted that with more than 70% of Uganda’s population under age 30, digital marketplaces are no longer optional. He emphasized that the kingdom must embrace global trends in smartphone usage and internet penetration to remain economically competitive.

Newton Kalera, board chairperson of Kibuga Investments Limited, said the initiative is designed to align cultural heritage with modern digital transformation. He added that the platform will provide young entrepreneurs with a space to market their skills and bridge the gap between local producers and the wider market.

Henry Ndugga, head of products at K2 Telecom, acknowledged that while Uganda already has established e-commerce players, the market has sufficient room for new entrants. He said the platform is designed to help traders move beyond the limitations of physical storefronts.

“If you have a business and want to sell online, this is the platform for you,” Ndugga said. “It enables sellers to expand beyond physical shops and allows customers to shop conveniently from their homes.”
