A new beginning for Malawi as Dr.Rev.Lazarus Chakwera sworn in on Sunday 28th June 2020 as new president by Chief Justice Andrew Nyirenda SC he promised his country prosperity as well improving diplomatic relations with neighbors.

“I know there many of you who didn’t vote for me and the prospect of my presidency gives you fear. I want you know that my administration will strive to give equal opportunities for all of us together. I am duty bound to give you my best,” Chakwera said in his inaugural speech after taking oath of presidency.

Dr.Rev.Lazarus Chakwera, Malawi’s sixth president, added that, “the time is up for us to stop dreaming. With your help, we’ll restore your faith by being a government that stands for the need of Malawians.”

“To stand before you as President today is my honour. It’s a honour that reignites the dream for a better Malawi. What use is freedom if you are a slave to tribalism, poverty? The dream of all of us together is to be the ones who enjoy of the Malawi soil.”

Malawi opposition leader Chakwera emerged the winner in the highly contested Tuesday fresh presidential election, beating incumbent president Peter Mutharika.

Chakwera defeated the Prof. Peter Mutharika with 58 percent of the votes.

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Chifundo Kachale made the declaration Saturday night after the full and thorough scrutiny of all the counted votes from 28 districts comprising 193 constituencies and 5,002 polling centers.

Dr. Lazarus Chakwera assumes the country’s presidency with Malawi vice president and leader for the United Transformation Movement (UTM), Saulos Chilima, as his vice president following the alliance which the two leaders entered into with seven other political parties.
