NUP Youth Leaders Urge Ugandans to Speak Out Against Human Rights Violations

The National Unity Platform (NUP) party youth wing leaders have called upon all Ugandans to raise up and have their voices heard against the ongoing human rights violations, which include arrests, detention without trials and kidnaps.

While addressing members of the press on Wednesday, August 12th, 2026, at the NUP party headquarters at Makerere Kavule, Frank Kabuye, the NUP Secretary for youth said that now is the time for the whole country to stand up and raise their voices against the ongoing human rights abuses and all injustices.

“As a party we request all young people to lift up their voices and speak out whenever they see anything wrong and make a contribution where they can and also thank and encourage those who have come out to speak out against these injustices,” Kabuye said.

Kabuye also noted that as NUP they will have regional meetings across the country and will use this time to engage opinion leaders to make their contribution and not remain silent where they see injustices.

“During our regional meetings, we shall use this platform to talk to parents, religious leaders, political leaders and cultural leaders to stand up and speak out about Uganda being under siege so that we can all as one stand up and change this country,” Kabuye added.

The NUP youth chairperson for Buganda, Sylivia Namutyaba said that youth are the majority and can mobilise and do what they can but don’t want to take the path of violence that President Museveni took while coming into power. She added that they would rather ask for the current government to heed for the call of young people and address their main issues.

“Many Ugandans have been unfairly treated and the constitution allows citizens to stand up and fight for all their rights. Ugandans have been calm and peaceful and have not taken the path that President Museveni took with his colleagues to go to the bush. We ask President Museveni to do what is right and as youths they will do whatever it takes if it comes to having a better Uganda,” Namutyaba noted.

The Mukono South Member of Parliament, Robert Maseruka asked the current government to stop giving youths handouts and focus on giving them marketable skills so as to fairly compete in the world job market.

“75% of Uganda’s population are youths but 51% are not educated and not trained. We need to address youth’s issues rather than giving political handouts by giving billions to musicians and Tik Tokers when we need treatment. As youth, we need to compete globally and therefore, there is need to skill them for survival than being beggars,” Maseruka noted.

As the world celebrates international youth day on August 12th, every year, NUP intends to hold regional meetings countrywide in the month of August to engage key stakeholders about the challenges of young people and how communities can work together to address them.
