Victoria University has been ranked Uganda’s second-best higher education institution in the National Council for Higher Education’s Revised Institutional Ranking Report, scoring 87.4 points as it prepares to hold its 10th graduation ceremony on Tuesday.
The ranking places the university immediately behind Makerere University, which scored 88.9, and ahead of Kampala International University on 85.8.

NCHE classified Victoria University in its “Leading” performance category after assessing institutions on seven weighted dimensions: enrolment vibrancy (20 per cent), programme viability, graduate training strength, gender balance and STEM participation (15 per cent each), and female participation in STEM together with curriculum relevance (10 per cent each).
According to the report’s detailed table, the university has 14,113 students enrolled across 66 academic programmes, an average of 128.7 students per programme. Female students make up 50.1 per cent of the total enrolment. Students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics programmes constitute 52.7 per cent of the student body, with women accounting for 49.2 per cent of those STEM enrolments.
The ranking comes as Victoria University marks a decade of graduation ceremonies and reflects on its contribution to Uganda’s education sector, workforce and economy. University officials have described the result as confirmation of the institution’s focus on technology-oriented and market-relevant programmes.
The 10th graduation provides an opportunity to review the university’s academic growth and graduate output over the past ten years. Further details on the number of graduands and qualifications to be awarded are expected to be released as the ceremony approaches.
NCHE’s assessment framework is intended to measure the capacity of institutions to deliver relevant skills for a changing labour market. Victoria University’s second-place ranking highlights the weight given to enrolment strength, gender balance and STEM participation in the national evaluation.
