In a significant boost to Uganda’s industrial landscape, Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Treasury (PSST) Dr. Ramathan Ggoobi visited the Roofings Rolling Mills Limited in Namanve’s Kampala Industrial and Business Park on Saturday.
The tour focused on the ultra-modern Cold Rolling Mill Complex, highlighting the government’s push for economic transformation through enhanced manufacturing capabilities.
Dr. Ggoobi, alongside Roofings executives, inspected the sprawling facility amid towering blue warehouses and gleaming white storage tanks. The visit underscored Uganda’s ambition to become a hub for heavy industry in East Africa, with the mill representing a leap in value addition and regional supply chains.
The Cold Rolling Mill adds an impressive 54% value to hot rolled coils, supplying essential inputs to 111 steel manufacturers across the region. This not only strengthens industrial linkages but also positions Uganda as a key player in the sector. According to official figures, in 2025 alone, the Roofings Group transformed over UGX 400 billion worth of raw materials, generated more than UGX 191 billion in tax revenues, and contributed over 0.5% to the nation’s export earnings.
Roofings Group Chairman Sikander Lalani welcomed the delegation, praising the government’s role in fostering growth.
“We express our appreciation to His Excellency the President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the Government of Uganda for the continued support to the steel industry,” Lalani said.
He reaffirmed the group’s dedication, stating, “We commit to further investment in Uganda in pursuit of the ten-fold economic growth.”
Meanwhile, Dr. Ggoobi pledged unwavering governmental backing.
“The Government is committed to supporting the steel sector to produce high-quality construction materials, increase tax revenues, expand export earnings, and create more jobs for Ugandans,” he declared. He further emphasized de-risking backward integration, noting, “This is a critical step in enabling Uganda to add value to its iron ore resources and build a strong steel industry to drive economic transformation.”
The visit aligns with Uganda’s #IndustrialAgenda and #TenfoldGrowth initiatives, aiming for sustainable development under the #DoingMore mantra.
With such commitments, Uganda’s steel industry is poised for exponential expansion, creating thousands of jobs and bolstering GDP.
