It was jubilations and excitement as people of Kalungu district smiles to their taps following the commissioning of a UGX2Bn piped water supply project by National Water and Sewerage Coprporation.

Residents have been trekking long distances to fetch water from swamps and other water sources that are also used by animals. The 2 Billion Shillings water project will benefit the sub-counties of Bukulula, Lwabenge, and Kalungu town councils.

Speaking at the launch of the project on Monday, Engineer Silver Mugisha, the Executive Director of the National Water Sewerage Corporation- NWSC said that the project will be completed in two years and targets at least 10,000 people in the area.

According to Mugisha, they are looking forward to improving their water production capacity which is currently minimal compared to the need.

Aisha Ssekindi, the State Minister for Water and Woman MP for Kalungu district says that the district has for years been grappling with the scarcity of safe clean water. She says that water had remained a privilege to a few communities in urban centers that were benefiting from mini supply networks in place.

Ahmed Nyombi Mukiibi, the Kalungu LCV chairperson asked the Ministry of Water and Environment to consider expanding the project coverage to other parts of the district.

Isa Buyondo, the chairperson of Mwota village, and Suleiman Ssembatya, a resident of Kalungi village say that the project has been long overdue owing to the heavy challenges they go through to access water in the area, including walking for long distances which exposes their children to safety risks.

Buyondo explains that they have for long relied on shallow wells, whose water he says is however dirty and contaminated with mud.
