Parliament to Vet New Ambassadors Says Bagiire

The Permanent secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Vincent Bagiire said Parliament has to vet the newly appointed ambassadors ahead of being sent to their stations outside Uganda.

Museveni last December appointed new ambassadors and their deputies, retaining some and replacing a number of them across the world.

“We are waiting for Parliament to vet the ambassador before they are posted,” Bagiire told The Homeland Newspaper, he said that Government will be presenting a supplementary budget to make funds available for the new ambassadors to begin work effectively.

Parliament has been on recess since December when the House was adjourned sine die. Jacob Oulanyah the Speaker of Parliament in mid-December adjourned the House sine die, meaning no appointment date had been set for the next sitting.Oulanyah said that in the recess MPs were expected to celebrate Christmas and the New Year.   

Speaker Jaccobo Oulanyah asked MPs to Renew their commitment to serving the people and prepare to come back to do the work you are supposed to do.

The speaker said that MPs will be given a notice of when to return which is expected at least after schools had opened in the first week of January 2022.  

The Parliamentary Appointments Committee chaired by the Speaker is charged with the responsibility of vetting ambassadors.

The Clerk to Parliament Adolf Mwesige Kasaija has written to MPs informing them that plenary will resume on Thursday 27 ²⁰22 at 2:00 pm and this marks the resumption parliamentary businesses and agenda.

Many new ambassadors and their deputies have been looking forward to begin their diplomatic tour of duty.
