“Araali was a keen mobilizer committed to improving the lives of his people—a remarkable life tragically cut short. My deepest sympathies go out to our elder Maj Gen. Matayo Kyaligonza, the bereaved family, the people of Kikuube and Bunyoro, and all who knew him. May God comfort us all and grant his soul eternal peace,” she wrote on her X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday.

According to Police Spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke, the fatal incident occurred incident occurred in Butyamba Village (Butyamba IDP area), Kikuube Town Council, where the victim was reportedly knocked down by a speeding Toyota Hiace motor vehicle.

Preliminary reports indicate that Banura had stepped out of his vehicle and was engaging with local residents when a speeding taxi, reportedly en route to Fort Portal, veered into bystanders.

The vehicle struck Banura and several others at the scene.

“The driver fled the scene immediately after the crash. However, the vehicle has since been recovered and impounded by police,” Rusoke said.

“Efforts are ongoing to identify, trace, and arrest the driver to assist with the ongoing investigations.”

Banura was immediately rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead by medical personnel.

Several other individuals injured in the accident were also transported to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital for urgent medical attention.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the total number of casualties or the severity of injuries sustained by the victims.

The late Banura was the son of National Resistance Army (NRA) bush war veteran, Major General (Retired) Matayo Kyaligonza.

His sudden passing has sent shockwaves across Kikuube District and beyond, with leaders and residents mourning the loss of a prominent local figure.
