Five people have been confirmed dead following a road crash at Kibukuta Swamp, Kayabwe along the Kampala-Masaka highway this morning.
Police said five other people were rushed to the hospital after they were seriously hurt in the 7am crash.

At least five people perished in a fatal accident that happened on Boxing Day.

The Monday morning accident that happened at Kibukuta Swamp along the Kampala Masaka highway involved motor vehicle registration number UBM 489B Toyota Hiance and motor vehicle reg no. UAM445B Mercedes Benz both moving from Kampala side to Masaka.

Faridah Nampiima, Traffic Police Spokesperson noted the deceased whose identities are yet to be established included three female adults and two male adults who were passengers in the Toyota Hiance.

Mbarara-Masaka-Kampala road has remained one of the accident-prone highways in the country, registering between 200 and 300 fatalities annually.

The Boxing Day crash comes barely a week after another crash on the same road claimed the lives of people.

The crash involving a bus Reg. No. UAW 561P belonging to Global Coaches and a saloon car Toyota Corolla Fielder Reg. No. UBL 270S happened at Nabusanke Trading Centre in Kayabwe at 11am on December 18.

The driver of the Fielder and two occupants (female adults) died on spot while one died on the way to Nkozi Hospital.

She blamed the accident on the over-speeding by both vehicles.

“…both vehicles were coming from the same direction and the Mercedes Benze was overtaking in a terrible speed and lost control knocked the Toyota Hiance which went off the road and overturned and the Benz overturned too.”

“We wish to remind all road users to be vigilant and observe maximum road discipline.”

On December 20, 2022 the minister of Works and Transport, Gen Katumba Wamala told journalists that 360 accidents had been registered in eight days, claiming 83 lives, including those of Serere Member of Parliament Patrick Okabe and his wife who died on Monday on Mbale-Tirinyi road.
