The Democratic Party (DP) joins a growing list of government officials, political parties and other members of the public to eulogize the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Kampala, Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga.

Dr. Kizito Lwanga was found dead in his bed on Saturday morning according to a statement issued by Fr Pius Male Ssentumbwe.

In a press briefing on Tuesday 6th April 2020, Okoler Opio Lo Amanu, the Democratic Party spokesperson, described Dr. Lwanga’s death as a great loss to the country because he has been paramount in condemning injustices.

“As a country we have lost a strong pillar who has not only been a pillar in the catholic faith, but he has also been a pillar in fighting for human rights, peace and harmony”, he said.

According to Democratic Party, the government should put up a road named after Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga as one of the avenues that we can strongly remember his contribution to the country.

“We join the entire nation to mourn his passing and therefore as DP we think that government should come up with monuments and roads named after him to appreciate his great contribution towards the Catholic Church and entire country at large”, said Okoler.

On the issue regarding the introduction of seven new taxes by the government including a 12 percent tax levy on internet bundles starting the next financial year, Okoler said the intention of introduction of the taxes is good but the timing is bad, the government seems to be under presser to raise domestic revenue and reduce borrowing but the direction they have taken is wrong

DP said that the government should instead put its focus on how they can help Ugandans raise household income growth which will, in turn, increase domestic revenue other than overtaxing them.
