Police in Bushenyi District have arrested seven suspects in connection with the brutal murder of former District Chief Finance Officer and businessman, Abias Asiimwe, whose burnt and dismembered body was discovered days after he went missing.
The 57-year-old, a resident of Kashenyi Ward in Ishaka-Bushenyi Municipality, was last seen on April 18, 2026, before disappearing under unclear circumstances, prompting a community search alongside security agencies.
According to investigators, the search ended in shock on Sunday when a burnt and dismembered body believed to be Asiimwe was discovered on one of his properties, reportedly occupied by a prime suspect in the case.
Greater Bushenyi Region Police Spokesperson Apollo Tayebwa confirmed the incident, saying the scene was examined and key exhibits were recovered to aid investigations.
“The scene of crime was examined and relevant exhibits were recovered,” Tayebwa said, adding that investigations were ongoing and updates would be provided as they progress.
He further confirmed that seven suspects, including a prime suspect, are currently in custody to assist with inquiries. Police also condemned the killing and assured the public that those responsible will be brought to justice.
The gruesome discovery sparked tension in the area, forcing police to fire warning shots to disperse an angry crowd as officers secured the scene.
The body was later conveyed to Kitagata Hospital Mortuary pending a postmortem examination.
Residents and community leaders have described Asiimwe as a humble and influential figure who contributed significantly to local development initiatives, including church projects and education infrastructure.
“He was a strong pillar where all of us have been clipped. We shall miss you,” said Elias Mparana.
Felix Turihamwe described him as a man of peace, saying: “His death has struck us like a thunderbolt. He was a pillar in our family and the entire village.”
Church leaders also paid tribute, with Rev. Keith Ayebare noting Asiimwe’s role in supporting the construction and development of Kashenyi Anglican Church.
Beyond public service, Asiimwe also ran private business ventures including a bar and guest house, and previously served as Bushenyi District Chief Finance Officer.
A tentative burial programme indicates that funeral activities will begin on Monday, April 20, 2026, at his home in Kyandago, Kashenyi, followed by a church service, body viewing, and overnight vigil.
On Tuesday, April 21, mourners are expected to gather at Kashenyi Playground for a church service and tributes before burial at his home.
Police say investigations into the motive behind the murder are ongoing as the community continues to grapple with shock over the killing.
