The Flying Squad Unit last night shot and killed two men suspected to be members of the group that attacked Kyabadaza and Busiika police stations in recent weeks.

Kyabadaza police station was attacked 10 days ago by three armed men who first shot and killed two civilians for questioning their presence at Kasule Ayanguwa village in Butambala district at 11 pm. The civilians were identified as Ibra Kalyango and Peter Nsubuga.

The same attackers forced four police officers to flee for safety giving them leeway to set suspects free and torch the station. Similarly, Busiika Police Station in Luweero district was attacked on October 31 leaving two police officers dead. The deceased officers were identified as Alex Wagaluka and Moses Ongol.

But the Flying Squad, alongside Crime Intelligence and Counter-Terrorism units, laid a trap for the suspects at Kito cell, Matugga town council, in Wakiso district, where two suspects were cornered and killed over the weekend. Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga says that the Flying Squad successfully trailed and killed the suspects but declined to divulge details about their identities.

“…Our flying squad teams and crime intelligence have been actively hunting down seven ADF remnants who sneaked back into the country. They managed to round them up in Matugga and there was a fierce fire exchange that led to the killing of two remnants and recovery of two guns and explosives devices,” Enanga said.

However, senior military and police officers have identified the killed Busiika and Kyabadaza attack suspects as Akim Kajubi and Male Muhanguzi. “These were found with two SMG guns whose serial numbers had been concealed. They had four magazines and 66 bullets. The team also recovered one IED (Improvised Explosive Device),” a senior security officer said.

Flying Squad, having learnt that they had two firearms, encircled their room barely two hours after the final of the FIFA World Cup last night. The room was then surrounded by five security personnel who fired several bullets through the windows and doors killing the two on their bed.

“There was an SMG gun in their midst. They were prepared to respond with fire at any threat towards them. But the security officers’ bullets did not give them any chance to fire back,” a senior security officer said.

A picture of the killed suspects that has been shared by a senior security officer shows them shuttered by bullets on their beds with a rifle. Bullet holes are seen in the walls and fresh pieces are spread all over the room.

The Inspector General of Police, Martin Ochola, has applauded the Flying Squad, crime intelligence and counter-terrorism for what he termed as a brave act. “We would like to remind the groups that no matter how long they hide or wherever they go, we shall always get them,” Ochola said in a statement released by SCP Enanga.

The revelation that the killed suspects are members of ADF means that earlier information by the deputy IGP Maj Gen Geoffrey Katsigazi Tumusiime, that the attackers were linked to a new rebel outfit Uganda Coalition Forces for Change –UCFC was unfounded.

UPDF has so far killed three attackers targeting soldiers, police officers, and private security guards for their guns. Those killed by UPDF are Dennis Ssekimpi, Tarsis Mulegera, and Rogers Alibuza. Yesterday’s killing has brought the number of killed suspected attackers to five while another suspect Muwonge Ssalongo committed suicide in a police cell in Tororo.
