The East African Community (EAC) Election Observation Mission has commended the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for the remarkable improvements they made in regard to transparency, preparations and management of the general election.

Speaking Thursday during the presentation of their preliminary report, the mission leader former Tanzanian president Jakaya Kikwete, however called on the IEBC to improve it’s communication with all its stakeholders in the future.

According to the report, the mission also observed that the campaigns were conducted in a calm and peaceful environment.

They also said they observed that parties and candidates had the opportunity to campaign freely and the isolated incidents of insecurity which were noted were dealt with by the national security agencies.

On cases of disinformation, misinformation and hate speech through social media, the mission commended various stakeholders for striving to address this issue.

The Mission also commended the mainstream media for voter education and coverage of the electoral process.

They at the same time appealed to Kenyans to maintain peace.

“We appeal to all political actors and Kenyans at large to continue maintaining peace after the elections results are declared. We implore all to embrace peaceful resolution methods, for any disputes that may arise,” said Kikwete.

The report is based on stakeholders’ consultations and findings of the EAC observers deployed across the country.

Meanwhile, the IEBC has declared winners for several elective posts in this year’s general election.

Some of them were declared on Wednesday but many are expected to know their fate Thursday as the commission hastens the process.

So far SportPesa CEO, Captain Ronald Karauri has been declared the MP elect of Kasarani Constituency garnering  32,406 votes against his opponent John Kamau who got 30,444 and incumbent MP Mercy Gakuya who had 24,790 votes.

Incumbent Sirisia MP, John Waluke, has clinched the Sirisia Parliamentary seat for the third time. Waluke garnered 16,461 votes, followed by Nasiuma Wafula (8,811) and Moses Nandalwe of ODM (3,521votes).

In Kibra, ODMs Peter Orero  emerged the  winner garnering 33,008 votes, while footballer MacDonald Mariga (UDA) had 20,049 votes and incumbent Imran came third with 18,901 votes.

Gilgil Member of Parliament, Martha Wangari, has retained her seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket, after garnering a total of 35,363 votes.

Wangari’s main competitor, Samuel Nderitu of Jubilee came second with 19,764 votes.
