Makerere University has today commenced its 76th graduation ceremony at Freedom Square, launching a week-long event that will see thousands of students awarded degrees and diplomas across various academic disciplines.
A total of 9,295 students are set to graduate during the five-day ceremony. Of these, 213 are PhD graduates, 2,503 have earned Master’s degrees, 6,343 are receiving Bachelor’s degrees, 206 are receiving post-graduate diplomas, and 30 are being awarded diplomas.
“For the first time in the past 15 years, Makerere has more make graduands than female,” said Vice Chancellor Barnabas Nawangwe.
There are 5,033 males and 4,262 females graduating.
The figures reflect the university’s continued contribution to producing highly skilled professionals and researchers to support both national and global development.
On the first day of the ceremony, students from the College of Natural Sciences, the College of Health Sciences, and the School of Law were presented for the conferment of degrees and diplomas.
The graduands completed studies in fields such as medicine, pharmacy, biological sciences, mathematics and law, underscoring the institution’s strength in science, health and legal education.
The graduation ceremony will run for five consecutive days, with different colleges scheduled to present their students on designated dates.
The event is being presided over by the University Chancellor and attended by university officials, government representatives, parents and well-wishers who gathered at Freedom Square to witness the academic milestone.
As one of the university’s most significant events on the academic calendar, the ceremony symbolises academic excellence and marks the transition of thousands of students into professional careers, research, public service and entrepreneurship.
Founded in 1922, Makerere remains Uganda’s oldest and one of Africa’s most prestigious institutions of higher learning, playing a central role in shaping the country’s intellectual and professional landscape.
