President Museveni has urged the clergy to preach to Christians the ways they can fight poverty in their households on top of spiritual
teachings.

In a message read for him by Vice President Jessica Alupo during the consecration of the Rt. Rev. Enos Kitto Kagodo as the fifth bishop of Mukono diocese yesterday at Bishop’s SS, Mukono in Mukono Town, President Museveni said poverty in Uganda is mainly caused by subsistence agriculture.

“I call upon the clergy to encourage our people to select profitable enterprises in the flowing four sectors namely, commercial agriculture, services, industries and ICT,” the President said.

He said it is in the four sectors where households can generate jobs and incomes.

He commended the church for working towards social-economic transformation through extending services such as education and health to the people.

“The church has exploited the private sector friendly policies of the NRM government to extend social services to the public for instance they constructed a number of schools and hospitals I across the country this is proof that they are concerned for the well being and material being of their followers” he said.

Church of Uganda Archbishop Dr Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu consecrated the new bishop at a function attended by retired bishops Jackson Matovu, Rt Rev. George Ssenabulya (central Buganda), (West Buganda) and others plus ministers Amos Lugoloobi ( State finance) David Bahati ( State industries) JC Muyingo (state higher education), Harriet Ntabaazi ( state trade) and the Buganda kingdom second deputy premier who represented the Katikkiro Peter Mayiga.

Former presidential candidate John Katumba excited the congregation, prompting the vice president to promise to meet him in the future so that he (Katumba) can mobilize support for President Museveni’s 2026 presidential bid.
President Museveni donated a brand new Prado Land cruiser to the new bishop and undisclosed cash.

Archbishop Kazimba said Mukono diocese is privileged to have produced two archbishops of the church of Uganda; the late Mpalanyi Nkoyoyo and him.

“I urge the new bishop to care for the retired bishops and me when I retire because my home is in this diocese. It would help if you supported Uganda Christian University to engage in commercial agriculture so that they can become food self-reliant,” the archbishop advised.

He appealed to all Ugandans to shun “evil” acts of same sex marriages which have infiltrated the educational institutions.

The new bishop Rt Rev Kitto Kagodo, asked for support from all Christians and pledged to improve pastors welfare.

“The construction a befitting magnificent cathedral that depicts our diocese is, long overdue we are going to embark on this project and I solicit for every ones support to see this dream come true in the shortest time possible,” he said.

“Everyone in this ministry matters and has a role to play and we have a God who teaches to profit. Isaiah 48:17. We have less time to disagree before we agree,” He said.

Minister Lugoloobi pledged full support to the new bishop and thanked outgoing Bishop James Ssebaggala for initiating a number of development projects for the church.

Central Busoga bishop Patrick Wakula in his sermon asked Christians to shun evil adding that many a lot of things like fake rights are happening like same-sex weddings.

“God has called you ( Kitto) to defend the biblical teachings,” he said.

A total of Shs700m was collected for the function.
