The National Identification Registration Authority (NIRA) has admitted that there are vices involved in the registration process that have seen several people seeking services at their offices fallen victims.

Addressing the media at Naguru, the NIRA Spokesperson Gilbert Kadiro said that they have arrested and sued a number of suspects allegedly involved in blocking and extorting money from people seeking services at their offices.

This follows a story published by the Uganda Radio Network indicating NIRA offices had gone under siege by conmen who extorts money from people seeking for services, under the pretext of expediting the process of acquiring the national IDs.

Kadiro says that some former NIRA officers especially those conducted the 2015 mass national ID registration exercise and former employees who are well conversant with the system, officer at DISO offices and LC1 chairperson extort money from people under the pretext of expediting the card acquisitions.

He says that illegalities like forgery of LC1 letters and stamps, forgery of District Internal Security Officers (DISOs) stamps and blocker age of services have been mostly registered in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan include the divisions of Rubaga, Makindye, Nakawa, Central and Kawempe as well as Wakiso and Mukono district.

Kadiro however assures Ugandans that they are engaging responsible stake holders like the Ministry of Local government and DISOs to stop this vice though it is not a national security as it was reported in the media.
