National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) expanded its customer base, service area and pipe network during the 2025/26 financial year but recorded a rise in water losses, according to figures presented at the corporation’s annual stakeholder forum.
Anna Nyadoi, NWSC’s principal economist, presented the results at the NWSC Annual Evaluation and Stakeholder Engagement Forum, known as the NWSC Feedback Baraza. The figures cover the first year of the corporation’s 2025–2030 Strategic Plan, which is aligned with Uganda’s Fourth National Development Plan.
Nyadoi said NWSC now serves 293 urban centres across the country, reaching about 22 million people. The customer base grew by 6%, ahead of the annual target.
The corporation laid 1,024 kilometres of new water mains and extensions against a target of 500 kilometres, about twice what was planned. It installed 62,226 new water connections, above the target of 60,000.
NWSC recorded an annual turnover of UGX 678 billion, which Nyadoi said was 99% of its target. The corporation’s asset base rose from about UGX 4.8 trillion to UGX 5 trillion, which she attributed to continued investment in infrastructure.
Non-revenue water, the share of water produced that is lost or not billed, rose from 33.7% to 34.4% over the year. Nyadoi also cited inadequate water production in some areas and outstanding customer arrears as continuing challenges.
She said NWSC is working to increase water availability, extend services to underserved communities, reduce losses and strengthen its finances. Customers and stakeholders were urged to pay water bills on time to support further investment and reliable supply.
According to Nyadoi, NWSC achieved between 98% and 100% of most targets set for the first year of the strategic plan. The corporation links its work to Sustainable Development Goal 6, which calls for clean water and sanitation for all.
