City pastor Martin Ssempa has clarified his position on alcohol consumption among Christians, stating that while drinking alcohol is not a sin, getting drunk is.
Speaking on a podcast, Ssempa said that the Bible does not explicitly prohibit drinking alcohol, but it clearly warns against drunkenness.
The Bible says getting drunk is a sin. Choosing to abstain from alcohol is a voluntary decision that the Balokole Movement of the East Africa Revival decided to adopt.
Ssempa pointed out that Christians around the world consume alcohol, often during meals, and that the issue lies not in the act of drinking but in the excess.
Drawing from his experience, he noted that alcohol is present in many cultures and Christian communities globally.
When you are still holding yourself in one world, it has been difficult for some Ugandan Christians to exist within a pluralistic environment because they look at a person who drinks a beer as if they have backslid as Christians but drinking a glass of alcohol will not make you lose your salvation.
Drinking alcohol is not as in to Christians, but getting drunk is the sin. There are Christians who drink alcohol, but they are I’m good terms with God.
