Police officer arrested, another on Run for Alleged Human Trafficking

The Police Professional Standards Unit- PSU is holding Justine Masibo, the Officer in Charge of Solo police station in Western division in Busia municipality for alleged involvement in human trafficking. The unit is also hunting for police detective Dan Wetaka, who is attached to Busia Central Police station over the same offence.

Mathew Tusubira, The Busia Deputy Resident District Commissioner, says that the duo is accused of trafficking six- 6 Congolese nationals from Kenya through Busia to Rwanda. Tusubira says that Wetaka escaped arrest on June 25th 2021 at the Uganda and Rwanda border in Katuna while attempting to traffic the six Congolese nationals.

According to Tusubira, the police officers were identified after the preliminary investigations should that they were killed Masibo, who gave Wetaka matching orders to transport them as suspects. Tusubira condemned the conduct of the police officers and blamed it on their prolonged stay in the area.

Patrick Onyango, a resident of Busia town, says that human trafficking is normal because security personals that are meant to stop it are part of the racket. He appealed to the relevant authorities to handle two officers in accordance with the law so as to server as an example to others.

George Barasa, the LC I Chairperson, Nangwe shops village in the Western division of Busia Municipality, said that they have severally complained to the heads of security in the district about some police officers abetting human trafficking but nothing is done.

The acting Busia District Police Commander, Tonya Odonkara declined to comment on the complaints and instead referred our reporter to Moses Johnson Mugwe, the Bukedi south police spokesperson who didn’t pick our repeated phone calls to his known mobile number.
