Deputy speaker Thomas Tayebwa used the Thursday prayer session which the Archbishop Dr. Stephen Kazimba Mugalu presided over at Parliament to call upon the brethren to pray for him and his boss Oboth-Oboth to overcome self-seekers and rogue-minded actors who are actively working towards driving a wedge between them.

He said such people have access to both of them and are determined to create chaos and cause divisions because that is how the thrive-the Baganda call it okulira mu kavuyo. Without naming any of them, Tayebwa said that currently, there are many such people and they keep moving from 5th to 6th floor and vice versa in a bid to sow seeds of discord between them. Gratefully, himself and his principal are aware of such mischief and are in position to deploy mitigation measures.

Tayebwa called on Kazimba, the rest of the clergy and the entire Ugandan populace to pray towards ensuring that fermenters of such chaos do not succeed in their mischief because once that happens, the whole country will be a loser. He said there is a lot the current leadership is deliberate about doing for the country and all people of good will should pray for unity because there is no way such will be achieved if the top leaders become antagonistic towards each other. “They want to see a situation where we don’t even talk to each other anymore.”

Tayebwa said they are determined to lead honestly and act transparently in everything because that is the only way to win back the trust of the Ugandan populace and the MPs they lead. He added that the desired cohesion is not just about him and Oboth-Oboth but about the entire top leadership at the legislature.

He said there is need for the entire team to be cohesive, defensive of each other and determined to push in the same direction including the Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi, the GCW Jane Ruth Aceng and the other members of the Parliamentary Commission.

The unity of purpose, which Tayebwa emphasized, was indeed demonstrated during the Thursday prayer session as both ruling party and opposition parliament-level leaders were involved in jointly organizing the prayer session. Blasio Zambali of NUP was the MC for the event and also put his singing abilities and the good voice to good utility.

His boss Joel Ssenyonyi ((who will be hosting lunch hour fellowship prayers every Tuesday 1-2pm at the LoP’s boardroom) led a prayer session during which he called on God to give the 12th Parliament with unity and leaders who will lead boldly while being deliberate about putting the agenda of the Ugandan people first, over and above the petty partisan political differences.

Wakiso Woman MP Betty Ethel Naluyima of NUP too was conspicuously involved and led a prayer session too in which she called upon God to strengthen all the MPs and leaders of Parliament so that legislators, staff and leaders of Parliament continue perceiving and treating each other as members of one family.

Tayebwa highlighted the agenda the Oboth-led legislature seeks to accomplish for and on behalf of the Ugandan people and concluded this is why lots of prayers were required for God to see them through.
