The Democratic Party (DP) has called upon government to rebuild its relations with Rwanda on trust and goodwill, in order to avoid a repeat of the circumstances that led to the closure of the Gatuna/Katuna border in the first place.

DP Spokesperson Okoler Opio Lo Amanu said that closure of the Gatuna border caused the country to lose out on a lot of revenue and there is need to ensure that this does not happen again.

Okoler made these remarks while addressing the press during the DP party weekly press conference on Tuesday.

“We wish to advise heads of government in these two countries that the new arrangement should be anchored on trust and goodwill, the absence of which may cause a similar occurrence in the future,” Okoler said.

On Monday, January 31, 2022, Rwanda finally re-opened the Gatuna/Katuna border, after close to three years of closure.

DP said that this what they have been advocating for and lauded Rwanda for taking the necessary steps to reopen, but called for further action to maintain the development.

“The two heads of State should now focus resolving the primary cause of their conflict,” he added.
