Who Is Muhammad Ssegirinya? Kawempe North MP!

Muhammad Ssegirinya was a Ugandan politician known for his role as the Member of Parliament for Kawempe North in Kampala, representing the National Unity Platform (NUP).

Below is a timeline highlighting key events in his life and career:

1988: Born in Butale, Kadugala, Masaka District. Originally named Richard Ssegirinya, he later converted from Roman Catholicism to Islam, adopting the name Muhammad.

2011: Contested for the Kawempe North parliamentary seat but was unsuccessful.

2016: Ran in the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party primaries for Kawempe North but did not secure the nomination. Subsequently, he was elected as the Lord Councillor for Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), representing Kawempe North.

2021: Elected as the Member of Parliament for Kawempe North on the NUP ticket, defeating nine other candidates, including the incumbent Abdulatif Ssebagala Ssengendo and former Deputy Lord Mayor Sulaiman Kidandala.

September 2021: Summoned by the Uganda Police Force over alleged involvement in rebel activities in the Greater Masaka region. Subsequently charged with multiple counts, including murder and attempted murder, and remanded to Kitalya Maximum Security Prison.

February 2023: Released on bail after spending about 17 months in prison. Upon release, he expressed intentions to regain his prominence on social media, particularly aiming to reclaim his status as the “Internet King.”

August 2023: Travelled to the Netherlands for medical treatment at Amsterdam Universitair Medische Centra, addressing health issues reportedly resulting from alleged torture during his incarceration.

June 2024: Discharged from Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi after a six-month treatment period. Doctors advised a three-month bed rest under medical supervision before resuming any work-related activities.

August 2024: Announced his intention to seek re-election for the Kawempe North parliamentary seat in the 2026 elections, despite ongoing health challenges.

January 9, 2025: Muhammad Ssegirinya was declared brain dead and in a critical condition.

The morning announcement was at 12.10pm updated with Lubaga Hospital announcing his death from complications related to multiple organ failure.

Throughout his career, Ssegirinya was known for his active engagement in politics, his dynamic presence on social media as “Mr Update,” and his commitment to representing the people of Kawempe North.
