President Museveni has ordered for the establishment of a service center in Masindi district for the sugarcane farmers.

This was revealed by Major General John Mateeka from Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) during a meeting with sugarcane farmers held at Kinyara Sugar Social club on Sunday where he represented the OWC chief coordinator General Salim Saleh.

Maj.Gen. Mateeka revealed that the center is aimed at minimizing the costs of production that sugarcane farmers in the district incur.

He added that the center that will be based at Kihonda agricultural demonstration farm in Pakanyi Sub County will be launched on Wednesday this week by Gen Salim Saleh.

The center will among others contain 40 tractors, sugarcane harvesting equipment and training facility for tractor operators, post-harvest handlers, fertilizers, ICT lab which sugarcane farmers will be accessing at reduced cost.

The chairperson Masindi Sugarcane Growers Association (MASGAL) Cosmas Byaruhanga welcomed the establishment of the service center saying it will reduce the challenges sugarcane farmers face.

Byaruhanga called for cooperation of farmers, government and Kinyara Sugar so that the impasse between the farmers and Kinyara can be resolved.
